What is Face lift surgery?

Facelift surgery, involves the removal of excess facial skin, repositioning the skin, tightening of the underlying soft tissue, in addition to treating the muscles of the neck region and fatty deposits situated along the jaw line and cheek. It can also be one of the more rewarding procedures in that it is directed towards the correction of the aging facial features and thus should help in the restoration of a more youthful appearance.
Other procedures are often combined with facelift surgery which may include liposuction of the neck, eyelid surgery and fat grafting.

Your Facelift surgery Consultation

The initial consultation is very important. Your surgeon will need a complete medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, previous operations and medication you are taking, if any. She will need to assess the extent of facial fat distribution, thickness, texture and elasticity of your skin as well as your hair line position in an effort to individualize your facelift procedure.

Preparation for Facelift surgery

Smokers will be asked to stop smoking 2 weeks before surgery. Aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for 2 weeks before surgery.

The Facelift Surgery Operation

All of the facelift operations are performed under general anaesthesia and last between 2-4 hours. When combined with eyelid surgery, the procedure can take longer than this. Usually a 2-3 day stay in hospital is all that is required.

The term “ Facelift” is often used to describe a Facelift and combined Neck Lift procedure. As these two terms imply, this procedure improves the entire lower 2/3 of the face and neck region creating significant improvement in those patients with signs of both lower facial aging as well as neck laxity. All Facelift procedures involve an incision (scar) in the hairline above the ear extending just in front of the ear and then passing behind the ear back into the hairline. The skin is lifted off the face and the neck, and the underlying platysma muscle together with its fibrous attachment is pulled and tightened with stitches. The excess skin is pulled and excised and the wounds are closed with a combination of dissolving stitches.

A small soft tube is placed beneath the skin (called a drain) that allows swelling and fluid to be carried out from under the skin into a collection bulb. This tube is usually removed 24-48 hours after surgery. A dressing is gently wrapped around the face and neck region at the time of surgery. Your surgeon will inform you when these dressing can be removed.

After Face lift surgery

• Moderate swelling and bruising should be expected during the first 10 days after surgery. To minimize swelling, you to keep your head elevated at a 45-degree angle for a couple of days after surgery, to keep the swelling down. Cold packs help to reduce pain and swelling.
• Some numbness of the skin is quite normal; it will disappear in a few weeks or months.
• The drainage tube will be removed one or two days after surgery.
• Bandages are usually removed after one to two days.
• Don’t be surprised at the pale, bruised, and puffy face you see. Just keep in mind that in a few weeks you’ll be looking normal.
• Do not smoke for the first several weeks after surgery as it can lead to serious wound complications.

Face lift surgery risks and possible complications

All surgery inevitably carries some uncertainty and risk, however they are small and infrequent.. Facelift is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed each year, and it can be done very safely.

• Hematomas: A hematoma is a collection of blood under the skin. Small hematomas can be observed and allowed to absorb spontaneously. Larger hematomas may require aspiration or drainage for optimal results.
• Infections: Antibiotics will be given to you prophylactically before and after surgery for several days to help prevent infection.
• Scarring: All new scars are red, dark pink, or purple. Scars of the face usually fade as they mature within the first 3 to 6 months. Abnormally thick, wide, or depressed scars may occur despite meticulous surgical closure. In this situation, the scar may be injected with steroids, placement of silicone sheeting onto the scar, or surgical revision may be necessary to achieve optimal aesthetic results.
• Numbness: Initially, expect some numbness on your face in particular along the suture lines. The sensation in this area typically returns within 2 to 3 months as nerve endings heal spontaneously. Some numbness and nerve damage may be permanent.
• Delayed Wound Healing or Wound Dehiscence: In some instances wounds take longer to heal than normal. Cigarette smoking, poor nutrition, and a compromised immune system can all cause delayed wound healing or wound separation.
• Skin Discoloration: Skin discoloration may occur after surgery. This may be revised after the healing process is complete.
• Facial Asymmetry: Motor nerve injury is rare. If it does occur it is usually temporary, but may persist.

Face-lifting is a very satisfying procedure in the correct patient and can produce a very pleasing improvement in a patient’s appearance and sense of well being.
The improvement in facial appearance will be immediately apparent following a facelift. However, there will be some bruising and swelling which may last several weeks.
